Reformation Day 2008!

Once again, Reformation Day is upon us. I wish I had a Martin Luther costume. This Friday marks the 491st anniversary of Luther's posting of his 95 theses on the Whittenburg Church door. Enter Calvin, Zwingli, Knox, others, and the rest is history. Happy Reformation day everyone!

In case anyone feels like celebrating with me, Ligonier Ministries is offering an ESV Reformation Study Bible for a gift of any amount. Huzzah!

The Grace of Obedience

Going through 'When I Don't Desire God' with the youth at church has been probably as beneficial to me as to  them- maybe more-so. I am so thankful for the Gospel, and even to see it in God's demands for our obedience.

We must worship Him, which means we must love Him supremely. We can't do this; in fact, we love ourselves supremely. The Christian feels the guilt of his/her sin and wants to change. Yet, even the process or the fight to change is not one of will but of grace.

I love Augustine's words from his 'Confessions':

"Give me the grace [O Lord] to do as you command, and command me to do what you will! ... O holy God...when your commands are obeyed, it is from you that we receive the power to obey them."

Augustine the Key to Reformation in the Black Church?

The blogosphere has been abuzz with discussion on whether or not the predominately black church can be reformed. Scotty Williams of 'Reformateur Creole Noir' thinks that Augustine may be the key. I found it particularly interesting as a few friends and I are making our way through 'The City of God.'
